To the Honorable the commissioners duly appointed under the act entitled "an act for the release of certain persons held to service or labour​ in the District of Columbia".

Your Petitioner Eliza Johnson respectfully represents that Caroline Noland of Montgomery County State of Maryland having claim to the service or labour​ of your Petitioner in the District of Columbia by reason of African descent, has neglected to file with the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia the statement in writing or schedule provided in the 9th section of the act approved April 16th 1862 entitled "an act for the release of certain persons held to service or labour​ in the District of Columbia".

Your Petitioner further represents that she was living in the District of Columbia on and long prior to the sixteenth of April A. D. 1862 and has been residing in said District ever since.

Your Petitioner further represents that she has herself filed the schedule required by the act supplementary to said act, approved July 12th 1862, with the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia; and prays that your Honors may grant her such relief in the premises as to your Honors may [seem meet?] and the nature of her case may require.

On this 6th day of January A. D. 1863 before the subscriber personally appeared Eliza Johnson and made oath in due form of law that the matters and things hereinbefore​ stated are true to the best of her knowledge and belief.

Eliza Johnson formerly held to service or labour​ in the District of Columbia by Caroline Noland claims to be manumitted by said supplementary act. She is about 40 years of age, a female rather below medium height.

Wm Brown (cold​) I have known Eliza for last 6 years. near neighbor of mine. was here on 16 April, was not out of the City. I do not know who her mistress was—lived at Mr Denhams for last six years—
Maria Stevenson (cold​) I know Eliza. She is my aunt. I know Mrs Noland. Eliza belonged to her. So did I. Eliza was here 16 April & ever since. I have been living in District 16 years & Eliza came here before I did. I know Mr [illegible] King knows facts.
