Lemon suffered a fracture of the femur as the result of being shot by a conoidal musket ball. He was eventually admitted to the Third Division Hospital, where he remained for over a year, clinging "to life by the slenderest thread." On 12 October 1865, Bentley finally amputated Lemon's leg. The femur bone was sent to the Army Medical Museum.
