Harewood General Hospital

Root entered Harewood Hospital, where his leg became infected. On 29 October, ten inches of necrosed bone was removed. He was subsequently transferred to the hospital at Elmira, where his leg was amputated at the middle third of the thigh. Root eventually died "of consumption, resulting from the wound and its effects, more than five years after the amputation."
