To Hon.​ Commissioners of Emancipation

John Brown Your Petitioner represents that he was the Slave of Richard Pettit of Georgetown Dist of Columbia That he is a free man under the act of Congress passed April 16th 1862 that the said Robert Pettit have never filed a Petition under the late act of Congress Claiming Compensation from the United States, Your Petitioner prays that a Certificate of his Freedom may be granted to him by requesting the Clerk of the Circuit Court to grant him his freedom paper and as in duty bound will every pray
