Maria Stevenson
To the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia
Your Petitioner Maria Stevenson respectfully represents that Caroline Noland of Montgomery County State of Maryland having claim to the service or labour of your Petitioner in the District of Columbia by reason of African descent, has neglected to file with the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia the statement in writing or schedule provided in the 9th section of the act approved April 16th 1862 entitled "an act for the release of certain persons held to service or labour in the District of Columbia".
Your Petitioner further represents that she was living in the District of Columbia on and long prior to the sixteenth of April A.D. 1862 and has been residing in said District ever since.
Your Petitioner further represents that she has herself filed the schedule, required by the act supplementary to said act, approved July 12th, 1862, with the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia; and claims to be Emancipated by said act and prays that your Honors will grant her that relief in the premises as the nature of her case may require.

On this 6th day of January 1863 before the subscriber personally appeared Maria Stevenson & made oath in due form of law that the matters and things herein before mentioned are true to the best of her knowledge and belief.

The Commissioners satisfied on the testimony of William Brown, Jas. Thompson, and Eliza Johnson, (col'd) of the truth of the facts stated in this petition and enclosed schedule, order the same to be so reported to the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia.
James Thompson (cold) I know Maria & have for 5 years. Was living here on 16 Apl in first ward. I do not know Mrs. Noland. I did know her on 10th st. She was here on 16th April.
Wm Brown (cold) Have known Maria for 4 years. lived not more than one square from me. she was here on 16th Apl never missed her. She lived on 10th st bet F. & G.
Eliza Johnson (col) have known Maria all her life. [niece of mine?] has lived here 16 years. go home every now & then & we hired ourselves & paid our masters. she has lived at number of places. I cant say she was here on 16th Apl positively as I did not often see her
