  • Place information: Battery Bailey was a dependency of Forts Simmons and Mansfield. This battery was named in honor of Captain Guilford D. Bailey, 1st New York Artillery, who was killed at the Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia, on May 31, 1862. One of the battery's parapets is now located in Westmoreland Park, northwest of Westmoreland Circle, in Montgomery County.

    Battery Bailey's sick were treated at the Post Hospitals of Forts Simmons and Mansfield.

Fort Alexander

  • Place information: Fort Alexander was one of three forts that were built in Montgomery County in July 1861, along with Forts Ripley and Franklin. They were intended to protect Chain Bridge and the reservoir of the Washington water system. Fort Alexander was named for Colonel Barton S. Alexander, who superintended the construction of the three forts. In the spring of 1863, the three forts were combined as Fort Sumner.
