In January 1864, the name of the Contraband Camp Hospital was changed to Freedman's General Hospital, which closed as a military-run hospital in July 1865.
The Indexes note that some of the hospital's records were turned over to the Freedman's Bureau at the end of the war. In 1894, all of the records were in the custody of the surgeon in charge of the Freedman's Hospital.
