Located in the Claremont mansion, about two and a half miles from the city, on the Orange and Alexandria railroad lines, the Claremont site had previously served as a Contraband Hospital.

Tim Dennee has detailed Claremont's history specifically as a smallpox hospital for African Americans, including troops, from 1862 to 1865.
