Grant was injured in the left ankle at Beverly Ford on 9 June 1863. He was admitted to Lincoln Hospital the following day. Although Grant's injured limb caused him sufficient pain and he repeatedly asked that the limb be removed, amputation was delayed until 7 December 1863. Following the operation, Grant remained at Lincoln Hospital until he was furloughed in early 1864, at which time he was transferred to Judiciary Square Hospital.
