Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Graduated from University of Pennsylvania in 1850 and from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1852 (and later received LL.D. from University of Pennsylvania in 1901). Commissioned Brigade Surgeon, U. S. Volunteers, in August, 1861. Assisted in compiling The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion, and created the Army Medical Museum. After the War he eventually succeeded Dr. Samuel D. Gross as Professor and Chair of Surgery at Jefferson Medical College.
