Relationship information: On June 22d, Surgeon Henry Palmer, U. S. V., removed a portion of the [sloughing cranial] bone, leaving the dura mater exposed. The parts surrounding the wound were very much inflamed, swollen, and painful. The wound healed rapidly, and on the 13th of December, 1864, the patient was returned to duty.
