Campbell General Hospital

Place information: Campbell General Hospital opened in September, but received the bulk of its first patients in December 1862. The hospital was reported empty in July 1865.
Relationship information: William Holmes of Co. D, 18th Massachusetts was wounded in the leg at Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862. Two weeks after his injury, he was admitted to Campbell General Hospital in Washington, DC. Six months later Holmes was transported to Mower Hospital in Philadelphia where his leg was amputated on July 22, 1863. Holmes never returned to service and was discharged due to injury in April 1864.
