Barnett was injured at Kelly's Ford on 7 November 1863, suffering a "shot wound of left knee joint." Two days following his injury he was admitted to Douglas General Hospital where his leg was amputated. Due to complications after surgery, Barnett died while under care at Douglas General Hospital.
