Fowler enlisted into C Company of the 42nd Massachusetts Infantry as Private. According to the
American Civil War Research Database
(
ACWRD
), Fowler survived the war, mustering out of the 42nd Massachusetts on 11 November 1864. To the contrary, the
Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion
(
MSHWR
) reports that Fowler was hospitalized, diagnosed with typho-malarial fever, and died while under care at the Second Division Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia.
