Wetzel enlisted into I Company of the 184th Pennsylvania Infantry as Private. He was later discharged due to injury; however, the exact date of his separation from this regiment is unclear.
The American Civil War Research Database
suggests that Wetzel was discharged from service as early as June 1865, while the medical case in
The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion
suggests that Wetzel's separation date was in August of that year.
