The Old General Hospital was the first general hospital in Alexandria, Virginia. It was the main general hospital until the Mansion House opened as the main general hospital, and the Old General became a branch of it on Dec. 1, 1861. From Dec. 1, 1861 to Sept. 20, 1862, it was known as the Washington St. Hospital. When the hospitals in Alexandria were reorganized on Sept. 20, 1862, this hospital became known as the Old Hallowell Hospital. It was a brand of the 3rd Division General Hospital. The hospital was located in the Old Hallowell school building on Washington St., both of which contributed to the hospital's alternate/successive names.
