PETITION.
To the Commissioners under the act of Congress approved the 16th of April, 1862, entitled "An act for the
release of certain persons held to service or labor in the District of
Columbia."
Your Petitioner, Mrs. Mary Ann
Haslup
of
Washington City D.C.
by this her petition in writing, represents
and states, that she is a person loyal to the
United States, who, at the time of the passage of the said act of Congress, held
a claim to service or labor against Two male
person of African descent of the name of
Casper Hauser Hopkins. and William Henry
Snell. and that they were at the same time of the passage of
said act of congress Her Slaves for and during the life of said
Casper & William
and that by said act of Congress said
Casper & William
was discharged and freed of and from all claim of your petitioner to such
service or labor; that at the time of said discharge said
Casper Hauser Hopkins
was of the age of Eight years and of the
personal description following:
Here describe the person, so as to identify him or her; and if there be more
than one slave, describe each one separately.
A Boy four feet Two inches high well proportioned. Color
Bright mulatto
and said William Henry Snell was of the
age of Five years and of the personal description following Three feet six
inches high stout built and quite black
That your petitioner acquired such claim to the
aforesaid service or labor of said
Casper & William
in manner following:
Here state how the claim was acquired, when, from whom, and for what price
or consideration; and, if held under any written evidence of title, make
exhibit thereof, or refer to the public record where the same may be
found.

Maryland Here was given and bequeathed To me by my said

in the year 1810 and willed to me by my
father in 1816 recorded in Anarundle
County Court Maryland. while my slave

William
That your petitioner's claim to the service or labor of said
Casper
was, at the time of said discharge therefrom, of the value of four hundred and fifty dollars in money. Here state such facts, if any
there be, touching the value of the petitioner's claim to the service or
labor of the person, as may enhance the same, and also such facts, if any,
touching the moral, mental, and bodily infirmities or defects of said
person, as impair the value of the petitioner's claim to such service or
labor, and conclude such statement with an averment that the petitioner
knows of no other infirmities or defects of said person which impair the
value of petitioner's claim to such service or labor, and that he believes
none other to exist. If the petitioner specify no such infirmity or defect,
then his statement touching the value of his claim should conclude with an
averment that he has no knowledge of any such infirmity or defect.

Your petitioner hereby declares that she bears true
and faithful allegiance to the Government of the United States, and that she has not borne arms against the United States in
the present rebellion, nor in any way given aid or comfort thereto.
And your petitioner further states and alleges, that she has not brought said said
Casper & William
into the District of Columbia since the passage of
said act of Congress; and that, at the time of the passage thereof, said
Casper & William
was held to service or labor therein under and by virtue of your
petitioner's claim to such service or labor.
Your petitioner further states and alleges, that her said claim to the service or labor of said
Casper & William
does not originate in or by virtue of any transfer heretofore made by any
person who has in any manner aided or sustained the present rebellion against
the Government of the United States.
And your petitioner prays the said Commissioners to investigate and determine the
validity of her said claim to the service or labor
of said
Casper & William
herein above set forth; and if the same be found to be valid, that they
appraise and apportion the value of said claim in money, and report the same to
the Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, in conformity to the
provisions of said act of Congress.

Arundel County, being sick and weak in Body but of sound mind
and memory thanks be to God. Do for the settlements of my Worldly affairs and
Estate after my Decease, make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form
as followeth that is to say Imprimis My Will and desire is that my Executors
hereafter Named do first pay and satisfy my Tax Debts and Funeral Expenses Item its
my Will that my Executors pay to Benjamin Freeland of
Calvert County, the sum of Twenty Four Dollars, which
I Justly due him Item I give and Bequeath to my Son Griffith Freeland
White one Feather Bed and Furniture one Silver Soup Spoon Six
Silver Table Spoons Six Silver Tea Spoons and Sugar Tongs a young Bay mare to be
at his full disposal at any time after my Decease my negro man here Likewise I
give and bequeath to my said Son Griffith F White the whole
of my Tract of land being in Anne Arundel County and part
of a Tract of Land call'd Whites Contrivance to him his Heirs and assigns
forever Item I give and Bequeath to my Daughter Martha Sampson
Brown one Feather Bed and furniture Item I give and Bequeath to
my Daughter Mary Ann Haslup a Negro Girl call'd
Delilah which she has now in her possession Item I give
and Bequeath to my daughter Sarah Kingsbury White one
Feather Bed and Furniture it being now in the Care of her uncle
Orlando G. White Five Silver Tea Spoons. Like wise it is my will that my
negro woman Sarah and her Child the value of them be
equally divided between my Said Daughter Sarah and my
Daughter Martha P. Brown to them
there

heirs or assigns Item I give and Bequeath to my three Daughters
Martha P Brown
Mary A Haslup and Sarah K. White my
House and Lot in the City of Baltimore the price thereof
to be equally divided among them their heirs or assigns Item It is my will that
the remainder of my Estate be equally Divided among my Said Children viz
Martha
Mary Griffith and Sarah to them their
heirs or assigns Lastly I constitute and appoint Dixon
Brown and William Haslup Executors of this
my last will and Testament revoking all other will or wills by me heretofore
made in Testimony whereof I do hereunto set my hand affix my Seal this Tenth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand

his last will and Testament that at the time of his so doing he was to the
best of their apprehensions of sound disposing mind memory and understanding
and that they together with Noah Duvall the other
subscribing witnesses respectively subscribed their names as witnesses to
this will in the presence and at the request of the Testator and all in the
