There is a discrepancy between sources regarding the spelling of this soldier's name. The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion (MSHWR) lists a Coporal "Thomas Beisty" as a member of the 43rd New York Volunteers. However, a soldier by this name does not appear on the regiment's roster as recorded in The American Civil War Research Database (AMCWRD). The ACWRD does, however, list a "Thomas Bresly" as a member of this regiment. Details (i.e., age, rank, and date and location of injury) in both of these records indicate that they refer to the same soldier.
Bresly's birth date range is calculated based on his date at time of enlistment. Bresly was 20 years old when he enlisted on 14 August 1861.
