Along with the spelling of this soldier's name, some details of Nickerson's case, including his age, date of death, and battle where injured, are inconsistent between sources. The American Civil War Research Database (ACWRD) lists Nickerson as 31 years old at enlistment, indicates that he was wounded at Laurel Hill, and dates his death on 27 May 1864. The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion (MSHWR) identifies this soldier as 23-year-old D. Nicholson, suggests that he was wounded at Spottsylvania, and places his death on 28 May 1864. Despite these inconsistencies between sources, other details (i.e., regimental information, date and type of injury, the subsequent medical treatment) in his case indicate that they refer to the same soldier.
